// Why Migrate
Why businesses leave Tally
Tally is desktop-bound
Tally Prime requires physical access to the machine or a Tally server setup for remote access. Zoho Books is fully cloud — your accountant, CEO, and team see live data from any device.
GST filing is manual
Tally generates GST reports but filing still requires manual export to the GSTN portal. Zoho Books India connects directly to GSTN for GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and ITC reconciliation.
No automation for recurring work
Recurring invoices, payment reminders, and vendor payment tracking in Tally are largely manual processes. Zoho Books automates all of these.
Limited integrations
Connecting Tally to your bank, e-commerce store, or CRM requires third-party connectors. Zoho Books integrates natively with Zoho CRM, Razorpay, Paytm Business, and major Indian banks.
// What You Gain
What you get with Zoho Books
01
Direct GSTN integration
Zoho Books India connects to GSTN. Push GSTR-1 data directly from Books, reconcile ITC claims, and generate e-invoices without manual portal work.
02
Bank reconciliation in minutes
Connect your current account (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, and more) via bank feeds. Transactions auto-categorise and reconcile against your ledger.
03
Multi-currency for exporters
If you invoice in USD, AED, or GBP, Zoho Books handles multi-currency with live exchange rates and automatic forex gain/loss calculation.
04
Full audit trail
Every transaction, edit, and approval is logged with user and timestamp. Useful for statutory audits and internal controls — something Tally's desktop setup makes harder.
// Migration Process
How the migration works
Typical timeline: 2–4 weeks
01
Cut-off date planning
We decide your migration cut-off date — typically the start of a new quarter or financial year. Everything before cut-off stays in Tally for reference. Everything after goes in Zoho Books.
02
Tally export
We export your ledger master, outstanding invoices (AR/AP), customer and vendor masters with GSTIN, and the balance sheet as of cut-off date — both XML and Excel formats.
03
Zoho Books India setup
We configure your Zoho Books India instance: chart of accounts, GST rates, HSN/SAC codes, payment terms, bank accounts, and e-invoice settings before importing any data.
04
Data import & opening balances
Customer and vendor contacts are imported first, then outstanding invoices and bills. Opening balances are entered as of your cut-off date so your trial balance matches Tally exactly.
05
Reconciliation & handover
We run a trial balance comparison between Tally and Zoho Books. Any differences are identified and resolved. Your accountant gets a handover session on Zoho Books India workflows.

// FAQ
Common questions about Tally → Zoho Books
Do we need to migrate all historical transactions?
No — and we recommend against it. You migrate the cut-off balance sheet and outstanding invoices/bills. Historical transactions stay in Tally for reference. This keeps Zoho Books clean and speeds up the migration significantly.
Will our GST numbers and HSN codes transfer over?
Yes. Customer and vendor GSTINs are imported as part of the contact records. HSN/SAC codes are set up in Zoho Books and mapped to your item master before import.
Can we continue using Tally for payroll?
If you're using Tally for payroll, you can continue running payroll in Tally and journal the monthly salary entries into Zoho Books manually — or switch to Zoho Payroll for a fully integrated setup.
Which financial year should we migrate?
The cleanest migration point is the start of a new financial year (1 April). If you're mid-year, the start of a new GST quarter is the next best option. We'll advise based on your situation.
Is Zoho Books India different from the global version?
Yes. Zoho Books India (books.zoho.in) is a separate instance built specifically for Indian compliance — GST, TDS, TCS, e-invoicing, e-way bills, and GSTN connectivity. We always set up the India instance for Indian businesses.
